For people with chronic knee pain, tell me if this sounds familiar, “Well, you’re not ready for a knee replacement, yet, so we will just do steroid injections until they are bad enough to qualify for replacements.” This sentence has been uttered by MDs for years. But why?
In the May 16, 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, a randomized controlled trial was published under the title, “Steroid Injections Increase Cartilage Loss in Knee Arthritis.”
The steroids decrease the inflammation and pain, but they accelerate the breakdown of cartilage, getting you closer to “bone on bone,” sprinting people to the finish line, where the prize is a pair of titanium knees that were unnecessary, to begin with.
Again, why i$ thi$ the $tandard? A fine question to ask before getting your knees, or any other area for that matter, injected with steroids.
