Why the Conservative Approach Outperforms Liberal Approach in Knee TreatmentIt is a common belief that any surgical intervention prescribed is underpinned by solid scientific evidence, designed to provide patients the best scenario for their health and well- being. However, the reality is far from this popular belief. Many procedures carried out by surgeons for knee pain have never been tested with the Double-Blinded, randomized, controlled trial (DBRCT) – the Gold Standard in science. This article seeks to question this prevailing viewpoint and highlight the necessity for a more conservative approach to knee treatment.

Questioning the Value of Invasive Procedures

The widely accepted narrative that invasive procedures are always the best option for chronic knee and back pain is increasingly being questioned. We are often told to respect the expertise of the surgeon and listen to their recommendations without question. However, it is crucial for us as a society to be more skeptical about these prevailing norms.

The Need for Full Disclosure

When reading Peer Reviewed Abstracts about Medical Knee Procedures, I often become dismayed by the lack of “full disclosure” offered by the traditional orthopedic surgeon in relation to the efficacy of their care. Outcomes are discussed with a level of certainty not supported by Scientific literature or Medical Research.

Fear as a Motivating Factor

Fear motivates people to do numerous things, and it is often used inappropriately to “motivate” individuals to opt for a procedure when conservative alternatives exist and are necessitous predecessors to more aggressive procedures. It is important to remember that skepticism should be met with evidence and understanding, not fear.

The Importance of Conservative Alternatives

Various studies and research have shown that conservative measures can be as effective, if not more, in treating knee conditions. For instance, studies have shown that brisk walking can delay knee replacement in osteoarthritis patients. One-third of Knee Replacements have been classified as ‘Inappropriate’, and various studies have called Meniscus Surgery Criteria into question.

Conservative Treatments: The Way Forward

There are several conservative treatment options that have shown promising results in treating knee conditions. For instance, Chondroitin Sulfate has been shown to help knee osteoarthritis, and Non-Animal Chondroitin Sulfate Supplementation has been found to be effective in the treatment of moderate knee osteoarthritis in overweight subjects.  Self-directed digital Exercise Plan has also been found to improve knee OA.

Conclusion

The prevalence of knee surgeries and invasive procedures is an indication of our societal norms rather than a reflection of the best course of treatment for knee conditions. There is a growing body of literature pointing to the effectiveness of conservative measures. As patients, it is important to question the norms, seek full disclosure from our healthcare providers, and explore all available conservative treatment options before making a decision to opt for surgical intervention.
